Remember, teenagers are trying to figure out who they are and where they fit into this world that we all live in. Oftentimes, their peer group becomes their most powerful influence, so the most effective parenting skills are proactive and flexible. In other words: let them find their path, but help light their way.

Here are a few tips when parenting a teenager:

  • Always maintain a structured routine for your teenager.
  • Set consistent limits that are balanced with love and nurturance.
  • Be willing to negotiate and compromise.
  • Ensure that all expectations are abundantly clear.
  • Know where your teen is, who they are with and what they are doing.
  • Do not attempt to choose your teenager’s peers, this will only irritate your teen and they will choose their friends regardless of your opinions.
  • Praise your teen, even for small successes.
  • Even though it becomes increasingly difficult, you must find time to spend with your teen doing something that you both enjoy, do not take “no” for an answer.
  • Teens need to know that you will be supportive and loving of them regardless of the decisions that they make. Every wrong decision is an opportunity to teach and to learn.
